Turkmen - A great tribe of Central Asia
The Turkmen are a very old people, who have been living in the area from the Caspian Sea to the western border of China for more than 1500 years. They are divided into various larger and smaller tribes and have abandoned their once nomadic culture to become sedentary. Among the most important groups are the Tekke, Yomut and Salor tribes. They are by far the largest population group in Turkmenistan today, living in the northern parts of Afghanistan and Iran.Turkmen rugs
The motifs of Turkmen rugs are considered the oldest of all oriental rugs. Their great variety and the long maintained tradition of their knotting has often been the subject of research. The Turkmen rugs are closely related to the Afghan rugs which were strongly influenced by them. Thus, it is now believed that the knotting craft once came to the country through the Turkmen in northern Afghanistan. Both types of rugs are also very similar in their color scheme, relying on dark red to brown tones. Our most popular categories
