Why rug size is so important

The size of a rug has a decisive influence on the room effect. A rug that is too small can look lost, while one that is too large can quickly dominate the room. With the right size, you can create a harmonious atmosphere and emphasize specific living areas.

Popular standard sizes at a glance

Different rug sizes are available depending on the use of the room and the furnishings. Here is an overview of the most common sizes:

80x150 cm: Ideal for small hallways, kitchens or as a bedside rug.
120x180 cm: Suitable for smaller living rooms or under coffee tables.
140x200 cm: Flexible use in living rooms or bedrooms.
160x230 cm: Perfect for larger sofa areas or dining rooms.
200x300 cm: For spacious rooms, open-plan living concepts or under dining tables.
300x400 cm: Ideal for large areas and luxurious interiors.
Round 300 cm: Ideal as a focal point in the room, under round tables or for spacious lounge areas.

Which carpet for which room?

Every room has different requirements in terms of rug size:

Living room: the rug should be large enough to place the front row of furniture on it. Common sizes: 160x230 cm to 200x300 cm.
Dining room: The rug should cover the table plus the chairs when extended - at least 200x300 cm.
Bedroom: A large rug under the bed (e.g. 200x300 cm) or two smaller rugs on the sides (e.g. 80x150 cm).
Hallway & entrance area: Narrow runners, e.g. 80x300 cm, offer a practical and decorative solution.
Kitchen: Small rugs or runners, e.g. 80x150 cm, provide comfort and warmth.

Tips for correct positioning

The arrangement of the rug influences the overall impression of the room:

A rug in the living room should at least accommodate the front legs of the sofa and armchairs.
In the dining area, the rug should extend at least 60 cm beyond the edge of the table so that chairs do not slide over the edge.
In the bedroom, a rug under the bed creates a cozy atmosphere - it should protrude on both sides and at the foot end.
