Gabbeh rugs - knotting art for well-being

The Gabbeh is a classic nomadic rug from Persia, which, unlike classic Persian rugs, is decorated with simple animal or plant illustrations. In the southern Persian region around Shiraz, this relatively new type of rug emerged in the late 1980s. These rugs are knotted in southern Iran today by nomadic tribes in Fars province. They are coarser than, for example, fine Persian Nain or Tabriz rugs. Their special wool quality makes them perfect rugs for a cozy and homely home. The simple animal motifs of a Gabbeh rug, some of which look like stick figures, give them a distinctive visual touch. Even a layman can quickly identify a Gabbeh rug because of this. Checkered patterns are also popular motifs of the Gabbeh rug.

Manufacture and knotting of Gabbeh rugs

Persian Gabbeh rugs are characterized by a high and thick pile of genuine Persian new wool. The rugs can be up to 40mm thick. The warp of a Persian Gabbeh rug is also made of hand-spun virgin wool and rarely goat hair. The Gabbeh rugs are just less patterned and contain a lot of free area with isolated animal and plant illustrations. The Gabbeh rug comes in almost all colors and is classically dyed with natural dyes. Most often Gabbeh rugs are red, blue or beige in color, but green, orange and turquoise are also common. The common knot density for Gabbeh rugs is between 60,000 - 150,000 knots per square meter, but there are also very fine knots that have over 300,000 knots per square meter. These include, for example, the Loribaft rug and the Rizbaft rug.

Indian Gabbeh rugs, unlike Persian Gabbehs, are made of cotton in the pile. This also makes it possible to knot these rugs finer. Indian Gabbeh rugs are also less high in the pile and usually between 15-20mm high. The Indian rug is a little more restrained than the Persian Gabbeh, which allows it to adapt well to any interior style.

Gabbeh rugs at home - robust and durable family rug

Gabbeh rugs have been known for their quality and beauty for many decades. Especially families appreciate this rug, as it combines coziness, durability and robustness. The Gabbeh is well suited for rooms with a lot of foot traffic and easily withstands daily stress. Only after about 10 years should the rug be professionally cleaned for the first time, so that the rug looks like new again.
