Overview Sarouk rugs

Sarouk rug - Large floral decorations in red and blue colors

Whether a present-day knotted or an antique American Sarouk, the large-scale floral and flower patterns are unique to hand-knotted oriental rugs. Their special quality also makes them more beautiful and valuable the older they get.

The Persian Sarouk

The Sarouk rug originates from a small Iranian town, but it has produced one of the most famous and popular Persian rugs. World famous are especially the large American Sarouk rugs, which were exported to America between 1870 and 1930. Due to the excellent wool quality and genuine vegetable dyes, most of these rugs have survived to this day and their purchase price is usually in the five-figure range due to their rarity. The old Sarouk have evolved over time into increasingly beautiful rugs, as the plant dye has developed an ever more beautiful and harmonious color pattern over time. The rose and blue tones cannot be reproduced in the beauty and closed harmony even with our current technical capabilities. For some years now, these American Sarouk have been sold back to Europe and Asia as so-called reimported Sarouk.

Patterns and colors of the Sarouk rug

The main colors of the classic Sarouk are actually always a darker blue as well as a claret red or rose. This coloration varies between lighter or darker appearance, but never fundamentally changes. The pattern consists of large-scale flowers and plants, which shows just the umbel of the flower in a size that hardly any other Persian rug. A special genre that does not conform to this image is the Sarouk Mir. This is decorated with a repeating diamond pattern and is lighter in overall effect. However, the Sarouk Mir is now already considered a distinct species.
