Bidjar Rugs

Overview Bijar rugs

Bijar carpet - The most robust pile in the world

The Bidjar is considered to be the most durable and strongest oriental carpet at all. A use over many decades is not uncommon. With its comparatively subtle patterns and colors, it has won many lovers over time.

The Bijar - A True Classic

The Bijar carpet is a constant among oriental rugs and it is also known by many laymen. It is incomparably hard-wearing and robust, which is why it is recommended to buy it even for rooms with a lot of foot traffic. The carpet owes its name to the city of Bidjar in the northwest of present-day Iran. Around the city, various qualities of the eponymous carpet are knotted. These range from simple to very dense and fine rugs. With us you will find only the highest quality Bijar rugs and you can be sure with a purchase that you will be able to use the carpet for decades in the best quality.

Indian and Persian Bijar

Meanwhile, very high quality Bidjar rugs are also knotted in India. These are often a little cheaper in the purchase price and softer to the touch. Indian Bidjar rugs have fewer knots per square meter than Persian rugs. Nevertheless, the Indo Bidjar is also virtually indestructible. Both rugs can be easily distinguished by the border. While the Indian Bidjar has a soft transition at the corners at the border, the Persian Bidjar carpet has an abrupt end. To the layman this might look like a flaw, but among connoisseurs it is a sign of authenticity and therefore quality. An often used pattern for the Bidjar is the rose. However, the so-called rose Bid jar are usually older rugs, which are rarely knotted today.

Origin and history of the Bijar

The carpet from the Persian province of Kurdestan used to be divided into three main groups:

  • Afshar
  • Halvai
  • Gerrus

The Halvai and Gerrus Bijar carpet was knotted by the local Kurds and was usually slightly lower in knot count than the Afshar Bijar. Today, good and quality Bijar rugs are called Bijar Bukan or Bijar Tekab.

Making of the original Bijar carpet

A genuine Bijar carpet is traditionally knotted by men. Cotton is used for the warp and pure new wool is knotted for the pile. In order to knot a Bijar so tightly and firmly, the weft threads are moistened beforehand and compacted very strongly with the help of an iron comb and powerful strokes . The work is very strenuous and requires a lot of muscle power. As a result, no other carpet has such a robust and tight pile as this particular Persian carpet. Imitations from India are not quite as heavily compacted, but in terms of durability they are in no way inferior to the originals. Bijar rugs are also often spelled as Bijar carpet or Bijar. However, the spelling Bijar has largely prevailed.
