Gashgai rugs - Nomadic knotting art on the highest level

The Gashgai are a nomadic people living in the southwest of the Persian city of Shiraz. The Gashgai consist of many different tribes, the most famous and numerous of which are the Farsimadan, Kashkuli, Dare Shuri and Shish Baluki. Other smaller tribes include Safi Khani and Rahimi. Among the Gashgai, there are about 25,000 families, which in turn are grouped into family associations. Their name has become world famous, among other things, because of a car. The rug of this tribe is one of the finer and more valuable nomadic rugs and thus stands out from the usually somewhat simpler Shiraz rugs. The Gashgai rug is usually decorated with a triple diamond arranged lengthwise. The colors of the Gashgai rug are mostly in beautiful red and blue. Some of the Gashgai rugs are decorated with only a single diamond, which is artfully decorated inside. There are often floral or animal patterns on the rug.

Making a hand knotted Gashgai rug

The knotting of rugs has a very long tradition among the Gashgai. Their craftsmanship is second to none. From the rug production, which takes place mainly in the province of Fars, the Gashgai rugs are considered the finest, which is why often on Shiraz rugs are sold under their name. Old Gashgai - nomadic rugs are always knotted on wool warp. Their pattern is approximately symmetrical, but slightly irregular, because the rugs are not knotted according to any pattern, but arise from the situational inspirations of the weaver. Modern Gashgai rugs tend to be made on cotton warp by today's settled weavers.
