Cashmere rugs: Features and characteristics

When you buy a cashmere rug from Rugway, here are the features that make each piece so unique:

  • You are purchasing a hand-knotted, one-of-a-kind piece.
  • In every work of art, the pile is made of the purest cashmere silk.
  • The high knot density - in our rugs it starts from 500,000 knots per square meter.

Whether round, oblong or square, each masterpiece is characterized by detailed motifs and patterns. In contrast to Persian rugs, the rug of cashmere is often worked in softer pastel shades. The design of the ornaments and patterns often goes back, historically, to Persian influence - because once the Mughals brought Persian weavers to India to their court. Furthermore, each individual piece captivates with its wonderful coloring and delicate, silky soft surface. Cashmere rugs are therefore particularly suitable for lovers of historical rugs with a long tradition, who want to stylishly enhance their rooms with the subtle colors and patterns.

The special knotting technique of cashmere rugs

Making the ornaments, patterns and figures is a real art and follows predetermined rules: In advance, the rug designer writes down the pattern for knots in its color spectrum on a sheet of paper. For knotting the talim is used. This is a board on which coded characters for the number of knots and colors. The master recites the instructions on the talim aloud in the form of a chant. This creates a rhythm of work and the chorus of rug weavers responds in a kind of alternating chant after the execution of the instruction. The talim thus makes it possible to weave without errors, in contrast to designs that are written down. When the knotters have worked the last pre-sung knot into the warp yarns, they answer loudly with "hou", whereupon the next knot is made. In this way, ornament- and color-identical cashmere silk rugs can be created simultaneously on several knotting looms.

Wide selection of oriental rugs at Rugway!

In addition to the impressive Kashmir silk rug, we carry other oriental rugs in our assortment:

  • Silk rugs are world famous. Their pattern and ornament design dates back to the Mughal Empire of the 16th century.
  • Ghom is a city located about 150 kilometers from Tehran. Here the craft of rug weaving has developed only in the beginning of the 20th century. Typical for Ghom rugs is the careful production, which finds its expression also in the knotting density of Persian knots.
  • Hereke is located on the northern Gulf shore of Izmit in Turkey and, unlike Ghom, has long been famous for its traditional rug knotting. A rug made there is considered synonymous with quality artwork of a unique level.
