Chinese rugs - From antique unique pieces to finest silk rugs

China has a long and ancient history of rug weaving. Contrary to the country's current image, however, these rugs represent the highest quality, as most date back to a pre-industrial era.

Old and antique Chinese rugs

Antique rugs from China are very strong in character and immediately catch the eye. Their pattern form large flowers and leaves decorated, which are additionally emphasized by the surrounding pattern-free areas. The basic tone is usually determined by two strong colors, which often form a strong contrast with each other. These antique rugs have not been knotted for a long time and are usually around 100 years or older and are therefore considered antique rugs. However, because only the highest quality virgin wool was used in the knotting process, the sheen of these rugs has developed over the years to an almost silk-like shimmer. Their feel is also exceptionally soft and supple. Because of the rarity and quality of these rugs, they have steadily increased in value.

Flowers and leaves

The style of Chinese rugs has changed little over time. They have become more restrained in colors and patterns, but still distinctive. Flower blossoms have cultural significance for in China, for example, the peach blossom stands for love or the tulip for courage. In addition to rugs, they also decorate porcelain, cloths and many other art objects.

Chinese silk rugs in Persian patterns

Chinese silk rugs, often knotted in Persian patterns, are also particularly famous. Often these surpass their originals even in fineness and knot density per square meter. They are knotted by Chinese women with the utmost dexterity. Due to the high knot density, their production is extremely time-consuming.
